Numsa threatens strike at VWSA Uitenhage plant
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) on Friday threatened to embark on industrial action at automotive manufacturer Volkswagen South Africa’s (VWSA’s) Uitenhage plant over the alleged dismissal of workers.
Numsa national treasurer Mphumzi Maqungo told Engineering News Online that six employees had been dismissed since February as a result of disputes over the authenticity of doctor’s letters submitted to the company following the granting of sick leave.
“VWSA questioned the authenticity of authentic medical reference letters, and demanded that each worker in question undergo an interview during which the nature and validity of their illness would be investigated, which was a breach of the worker’s privacy,” he said.
Maqungo added that workers who refused to be interviewed were dismissed. He said that the decision to consider strike action was as a result of the company not responding to a letter from the union in this regard.
However, VWSA communications GM Matt Gennrich refuted the allegations and said it had not dismissed any employees who had recently been on sick leave.
“In instances where sick leave notes are believed to be dubious by our company, we have asked for further substantiation from the employee and his consulting doctor. No employees have been dismissed for this offence,” he said.
Gennrich added that VWSA’s absence policy complied with the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, which allowed for employees to take up to 30-days sick leave within a three-year cycle.
